About the 6 day Rongai Route

6 day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro trek with guides

As the only route that approaches the mountain from the north, the Rongai Route is quite different from the others. You begin your trip close to the Kenyan border and journey through areas of pristine wilderness before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Camp at the base of the summit massif. The descent follows the Marangu Route, creating a complete north-south traverse of Kilimanjaro.

Because the northern side experiences lower precipitation within the rain shadow, this trail is exceptionally well-sheltered and ideal for trekking during the rainy season. It is much quieter than southern routes, making it a favorite for hikers seeking tranquility and unique scenic panoramas.

Rongai features a gentler gradient during the lower ascents, making it slightly easier physically in the beginning, though summit night remains a demanding alpine challenge.

Is the 6 day Rongai trip right for you?

Good for
  • Hikers seeking a quieter, less crowded trail
  • Trekkers looking for drier conditions during rainy seasons
  • Climbers wanting a scenic north-to-south mountain traverse
  • Private groups, solo travellers, and nature lovers
Think twice if
  • You want shorter transit drives to the trailhead
  • You prefer camping exclusively without hut stays on the descent
  • You want the high-traffic camaraderie found on Machame
