Standing at 4,562 meters (14,967 ft) high, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Although over 1,000 meters shorter than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is an incredible free-standing volcanic cone offering spectacular scenery, dramatic crater cliffs, and unique wildlife sightings.
Because Mount Meru sits right in the middle of Arusha National Park, the lower slopes double as an escorted walking safari where you can spot giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, elephants, and a wide variety of birds and monkeys. It is frequently climbed as a standalone adventure or as a premier acclimatisation warmup before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro.
You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel. You will meet your mountain guide for a thorough briefing on your upcoming trek and an equipment check to ensure you have all necessary gear. Missing items can be rented on this day.
After registration at Momella Gate, your trek begins. Because Meru is inside Arusha National Park, an armed ranger escorts you through a true walking safari. Look out for giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, elephants, and colobus monkeys in the lush montane forest. After passing Maio Falls and the giant Fig Tree Arch, you arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and a stunning sunset view.
The trail ascends steeply along wooden steps through dense forest into heather and moorland zones. After reaching “Mgongo wa Tembo” (Elephant Back) at 3,200m for a scenic break, we continue to Saddle Hut. In the afternoon, you can rest or take an optional acclimatisation hike up Little Meru (3,820m) for panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Park before dinner.
Summit day begins around 1:30 AM with a steep climb over rocky terrain to Rhino Point (3,820m). From there, navigate the narrow crater ridge of ash and rock past Cobra Point (4,350m) to reach Socialist Peak (4,562m) just in time for a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the summit, descend rapidly back past Saddle Hut and Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate for your transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
